snow white
Snow White's mother died during childbirth and her father makes a very bad decision to remarry a terrible, envious woman and make her queen (as well as Snow White's stepmother). Snow White grows up to be incredibly beautiful and her terrible stepmother is beside herself with envy. The stepmom has a looking glass that can not only speak but is also honest to a fault. Usually this looking glass tells her that she's the prettiest in the land but one day it decides to let her know that her stepdaughter's beauty has surpassed her own (Gulp!). Pop quiz! Will she:
A) gracefully accept that she is aging and that beauty changes over time, but that's ok because beauty is a completely subjective concept that really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things,
B) realize the mirror is a toxic addiction in her life and seek help to try to distance herself from her unhealthy and obsessive thoughts, or
C) hire a hunter to take snow white to the woods and bring back her stepdaughter's lungs and liver so she can cook them up and eat them with some fava beans and a nice Chianti?
If you guessed ‘C’ you're correct! That's right, the original Snow White contains allusions to some good old-fashioned cannibalism! Luckily, the hunter couldn't go through with killing Snow White and brought the queen the organs of an animal instead. Meanwhile, back in the woods Snow White stumbles across the house of the Seven Dwarfs and (in a scene reminiscent of Goldilocks) indulges in some lighthearted B & E, eats their food and falls asleep. When they find her they invite her to stay with them in exchange for some housekeeping. They warn her not to let anyone in while they are gone during the day. Snow white can't resist and lets her disguised step mother in, not once but twice. Both times end in a near death experience for snow white; first with some dress laces and next with a poison comb.
You know that old saying “Fool me once shame on me, fool me twice...”, well there's no fool me thrice. You know why? Because no one should fall for the same scheme three times! After the first two brushes with death, one can't help but wonder if Snow White has any survival instincts at all. Anyway, third time really is the charm for the stepmother and she is able to successfully kill her beautiful, naïve stepdaughter with a poison apple. The bereft dwarfs place S.W. in a glass coffin, because she's too awesome to bury underground, and a prince falls in love with her in spite of her unfortunate condition (death). As he is transporting the coffin it falls and a piece of the poison apple is dislodged from Snow White's throat. Although she has been dead for days, she wakes up and marries the prince. And what happens to the evil step mother? Well, she is forced to put on a pair of red hot iron shoes and dance herself to death, obviously!
